Clearing and cleaning up loft insulation involves both removing the insulation material and ensuring that the space is left clean and safe.
Here’s a detailed guide on how to clear and clean up loft insulation effectively:
1. Preparation
Safety Gear: Wear protective clothing including gloves, long sleeves, pants, goggles, and a dust mask or respirator to protect against insulation fibers and dust.
Ventilation: Ensure the loft space is well-ventilated to minimize airborne particles.
Clear the Area: Remove any stored items or obstacles from the loft to create a clear working space.
2. Tools and Equipment
Utility Knife: Use a sharp utility knife or scissors to cut through insulation material.
Heavy-duty Trash Bags: Prepare sturdy, large trash bags to collect and dispose of removed insulation.
Vacuum Cleaner: Have a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter ready to clean up any residual dust or fibers.
Dustpan and Brush: For cleaning up smaller debris and dust.
3. Clearing Loft Insulation
Fibreglass Insulation
Cut and Bag: Use a utility knife to cut fibreglass insulation into manageable sections.
Bagging: Place the cut sections into heavy-duty trash bags, ensuring bags are securely sealed to prevent fibers from escaping.
Vacuuming: Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to clean up any remaining dust or fibers from surfaces and the floor.
Blown-In Insulation
Scoop and Bag: Use a long-handled shovel or scoop to gather loose blown-in insulation into trash bags.
Containment: Securely seal bags to prevent insulation from scattering during removal.
Vacuuming: Vacuum any remaining insulation or dust with a HEPA filter vacuum.
Spray Foam Insulation
Cut and Remove: Cut and scrape spray foam insulation using a long-handled scraper or knife.
Bagging: Place removed foam into heavy-duty bags and seal securely.
Professional Assistance: Removing spray foam insulation may require professional assistance due to its adhesive nature and potential hazards.
Natural and Recycled Material Insulation
Bagging: Pack natural or recycled material insulation into appropriate containers or bags.
Sealing: Securely seal containers to prevent dispersion of insulation material.
Disposal: Follow local disposal guidelines for recycling or composting options.
4. Cleaning Up
Inspect for Debris: After removing insulation, inspect the loft for any remaining debris or dust.
Damp Cleaning: Use a damp cloth to wipe down surfaces and remove any residual particles or dust.
Vacuuming: Vacuum the entire loft space with a HEPA filter vacuum to ensure all loose particles are removed.
Dispose of Waste: Dispose of insulation waste according to local regulations. Contact your local waste management authority for guidance on proper disposal methods.
5. Additional Tips
Work Methodically: Start from one end of the loft and work systematically to ensure thorough removal and cleaning.
Protective Measures: Throughout the process, continue wearing protective gear to minimize exposure to dust and fibers.
Professional Assistance: For large amounts of insulation or challenging removal tasks, consider hiring a professional insulation removal service.
Inspect for Damage: Inspect the loft structure for any signs of damage or issues that may need repair before installing new insulation.
By following these steps and safety precautions, you can effectively clear and clean up loft insulation, ensuring a clean, safe, and prepared space for any further insulation work or other uses.
Great job by these guys.
Emptied all the old insulation out of our loft.
Would highly recommend.
We used this company a couple of days ago and are really impressed with the overall service provided. The lads were here almost 4 and a half hours completely clearing the loft and cleaning it afterwards. They used coverings on the stairs and landing to keep the carpet clean. Our loft looks like a new loft now and we didn't realise just how big it is with all the rubbish removed. Great set of lads, would highly recommend this company. 👍
Fantastic service by the team of lads that came to remove my old insulation. They also removed old wood that was there at a very reasonable price and made sure there was no mess. Turned up when they said they would, very polite and professional. Would definitely recommend.

I highly recommend these guys who recently helped us clear and clean out our loft in Newcastle after we had rodents in. They removed old junk and the old insulation then cleaned up the rodent droppings and hoovered the loft out. They were very friendly, made sure no dust and dirt got into our home and cleaned up after themselves. We are elderly people so we couldn't do this but they did everything in half a day. We tried all over to get someone to do the works for us but these guys were the only ones to come out and give us a qoute. Would use again if we ever have another rodent problem.
