Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to remove loft insulation?

The price to remove old loft insulation varies based on property size and location. Here at UK loft Insulation Removal, however, we have formulated a standard price structure based on 20 + years of industry experience. We factor in our operating costs including labour, fuel, equipment, and tools used to carry out the job, disposal fees, insurance and other associated costs. With us, the price we quote you is the price you will pay. We don’t add on any extra costs or hidden costs.

How do I get rid of old loft insulation?

We can remove and dispose of your old loft insulation for you. It’s a simple process from start to finish for us and therefore because of this it becomes a simple and hassle-free service for our customers. It is more advisable to hire a professional and fully insured company like us to carry out what is labour intensive, hazardous and with the added difficulty of disposing the old insulation. Most if not all household recycling centres will not take old loft insulation.

Is it safe to remove loft insulation?

Its perfectly safe for ourselves because we have the experience, knowledge, appropriate safety-wear and equipment to go up into a loft to remove and dispose of old insulation. Insulation is classed as hazardous material due to the fibres used in the material which can damage your lungs, eyes, and respiratory system if breathed in. It can also cause a nasty rash and the loft space also is a hazardous area to work in, most lofts usually contain dust, dirt and often rodent droppings and urine, and even the occasional animal carcasses.

Can I put my old loft insulation in a skip?

It all depends on the skip company; most are not licenced to take away and dispose of loft insulation or may charge extra to place such material into a skip. Most skip hire companies use open skips and placing insulation inside of a skip could cause an environmental hazard where fibres and spores from the insulation if not bagged up and secured properly could escape into the open air. If you plan on hiring a skip and doing it yourself, check first with the skip company and their policies and with your local authority too as most skip hire companies require a council permit first to place one of their skips on a public highway if one cannot be placed on a drive or garden. You don’t want to be hit by extra charges or to take your insulation to a household waste recycling centre and be turned away. Be wary of fly-tippers also, you will be liable for any waste from your property you’ve paid someone else to remove and dispose of it, if fly-tipped. You can face a £5,000 fine and even imprisonment!

What do I need to get rid of my old loft insulation?

You would need an appropriate vehicle to place the old insulation into (using your own personal vehicle would carry a risk of the hazardous material escaping and becoming airborne within the vehicle which is hazardous to humans, a waste carriers license if using a commercial waste recycling facility and often an account, a waste transfer note, the funds to pay for any disposal (usually several hundred pounds per load), for the old insulation to be secured and contained, ladders to access the loft, lighting, safety-wear, appropriate clothing, safety boards if none exist and if using a household recycling center that allows householders to dispose of old insulation, it will need to be segregated from other waste at the facility. It is also a very time-consuming job and usually takes 2-3 people and often a full day and several loads.

What size vehicles do you use?

We use jumbo sized luton box vans, capable of carrying up to 1 tonne of waste that are contained, unmarked for your discretion and ecofriendly.

How many people do you send to remove the loft insulation?

We send 2-3 members of our fully uniformed, licenced members of our team on every loft insulation job. As a family run business, we do not sub-contract so every member of our team are fully experienced and trained to remove and dispose of old loft insulation.

Can you install new loft insulation up into my loft after you have removed the old insulation?

Yes, that is a separate service we provide and something we are ideally placed to quote for after removing the old insulation from your home. However, we can also quote you a price based on a few questions over the telephone or via email.

Why do I need to remove my old loft insulation?

Loft insulation if old will be an energy and therefore money draining issue for your entire property the longer it remains up inside the loft. Newer insulation is far more ecofriendly and helps insulate your home much better and will in time save you a lot of money, on average of upto £500 a year per UK national statistics. Newer material lasts longer too, is less hazardous and will be upto date with all current UK fire retardant regulation laws. Most properties, even newer builds have outdated insulation that in time becomes weakened due to condensation, maybe leaks in the roof, rodent infestations and due to general decompensation of the old material which weakens over time. If you have just bought a property or plan any future loft or roof work or have a rodent infestation or damage to your roof, it’s always wise to look at the old insulation that is already in place to check if it does need replaced or if it is outdated and a potential fire/hazard risk.

I’m worried if I remove the old loft insulation, it will create a huge mess and leave my home looking like a building site, will this be the case?

No, we try and minimize any disruption to your home during the whole removal process and try to minimize any dirt or debris from the loft entering the home. We secure the landing or passageway or direct areas underneath the loft access with sheeting and often we don’t even need to hoover up. If the loft area is particularly larger than average or there is a lot of old insulation up there that will take more than a day to remove, once we have finished on day 1, we pack up everything and close the loft hatch or secure it and leave you free to navigate your home without any ladders, lightening, waste or tools and other equipment remaining in situ or getting in your way.

I highly recommend these guys who recently helped us clear and clean out our loft in Newcastle after we had rodents in. They removed old junk and the old insulation then cleaned up the rodent droppings and hoovered the loft out. They were very friendly, made sure no dust and dirt got into our home and cleaned up after themselves. We are elderly people so we couldn't do this but they did everything in half a day. We tried all over to get someone to do the works for us but these guys were the only ones to come out and give us a qoute. Would use again if we ever have another rodent problem.

We used this company a couple of days ago and are really impressed with the overall service provided. The lads were here almost 4 and a half hours completely clearing the loft and cleaning it afterwards. They used coverings on the stairs and landing to keep the carpet clean. Our loft looks like a new loft now and we didn't realise just how big it is with all the rubbish removed. Great set of lads, would highly recommend this company. 👍

Fantastic service by the team of lads that came to remove my old insulation. They also removed old wood that was there at a very reasonable price and made sure there was no mess. Turned up when they said they would, very polite and professional. Would definitely recommend.
