Understanding & Addressing Rat Loft Infestations: A Comprehensive Guide

The Common Brown Rat (Sewer Rat)

The most prevalent rat species in the UK is the brown rat, also known as the sewer rat. These rats can thrive in various environments as long as they have access to food, water, and shelter.

Common Habitats:

  • Homes: Loft spaces, wall cavities, cellars, and under floorboards.
  • Gardens: Compost heaps and under sheds.
  • Sewer Systems: Commonly found living in sewers.

Nesting Behavior:

  • Nests and Burrows: Rats create nests or burrows with tunnels typically 7-12 cm in diameter.
  • Infestation Signs: A rat seen during the day often indicates a significant infestation.

Diet:

  • Favorite Foods: Cereal products are preferred, but rats will eat almost anything, including:
    • Waste food in and outside bins.
    • Naturally occurring fruits and vegetation.

  • Contamination: Rats contaminate food and surfaces with urine and droppings, posing health risks.

Steps to Address a Rat Infestation:

  1. Detection and Inspection:

    • Look for droppings, gnaw marks, nests, and footprints.
    • Inspect loft spaces, wall cavities, cellars, and other potential habitats.

  2. Immediate Actions:

    • Traps: Set up traps in areas where rats have been seen or where signs of their presence are noticeable.
    • Baits and Poison: Use rodenticides cautiously and according to guidelines to avoid accidental poisoning of pets or children.

  3. Professional Help:

    • Pest Control Services: Engage professionals for thorough inspection, extermination, and advice on preventive measures.

  4. Cleaning and Sanitization:

    • Remove and properly dispose of droppings and contaminated materials.
    • Disinfect areas where rats were present to prevent the spread of diseases.

  5. Preventive Measures:

    • Seal Entry Points: Block gaps, cracks, and holes in walls, floors, and foundations.
    • Food Storage: Keep food in rodent-proof containers and maintain cleanliness in food storage areas.
    • Waste Management: Securely cover bins and promptly dispose of waste.
    • Garden Maintenance: Keep gardens tidy, remove potential food sources, and manage compost heaps properly.

Conclusion

Rat infestations pose significant health risks and can cause considerable damage to property. Prompt detection, effective extermination, and preventive measures are essential to control and eliminate infestations. Engaging professional services can ensure thorough and safe handling of rat problems, leading to a healthier and more secure living environment.

I highly recommend these guys who recently helped us clear and clean out our loft in Newcastle after we had rodents in. They removed old junk and the old insulation then cleaned up the rodent droppings and hoovered the loft out. They were very friendly, made sure no dust and dirt got into our home and cleaned up after themselves. We are elderly people so we couldn't do this but they did everything in half a day. We tried all over to get someone to do the works for us but these guys were the only ones to come out and give us a qoute. Would use again if we ever have another rodent problem.

We used this company a couple of days ago and are really impressed with the overall service provided. The lads were here almost 4 and a half hours completely clearing the loft and cleaning it afterwards. They used coverings on the stairs and landing to keep the carpet clean. Our loft looks like a new loft now and we didn't realise just how big it is with all the rubbish removed. Great set of lads, would highly recommend this company. 👍

Fantastic service by the team of lads that came to remove my old insulation. They also removed old wood that was there at a very reasonable price and made sure there was no mess. Turned up when they said they would, very polite and professional. Would definitely recommend.
